Four pillars of river-based cultural programming in the Klamath Basin.
Providing Indigenous youth direct access to the Klamath River and Upper Klamath Lake through kayak, canoe, and raft programs — reconnecting “Maqlaqs” to the waters that define their cultures.
A whitewater leadership initiative training Klamath, Modoc, and Yahooskin youth to navigate and advocate for the Klamath River through the historic dam removal era.
Equipping youth with the environmental knowledge, leadership skills, and cultural framework to serve as stewards of their ancestral homeland waterways.
Integrating traditional food systems, oral histories, and place-based learning with paddlesport programming for a holistic reconnection to Klamath heritage.
Maqlaqs Paddle (EIN 33-2679280, D-U-N-S® 132527640) is based in Chiloquin, Oregon — the heart of Klamath Tribes territory. Chiloquin sits at the confluence of the Williamson River and Upper Klamath Lake, surrounded by ponderosa pine forests, marshland, and one of the most culturally significant river systems in the Pacific Northwest.
Founded by citizens of the Klamath Tribes, Maqlaqs Paddle emerged from the transformative Klamath Dam Removal project — the largest dam removal in US history — as a vehicle for Indigenous-led river restoration and youth programming.
“Maqlaqs means people. Our people are river people. When the river returns, our people return.”
